Land and indigenous rights defenders at risk in Brazil — Protect Defenders Now!

The ProtectDefenders.eu digest of alerts reports two recent killings of HRDs in Anapu, which elevates concerns about the lack of effective protection and access to justice for land rights defenders in the Brazilian state of Pará. Pará has one of the highest numbers of killings of environmental defenders in the country. Considered as a priority country for ProtectDefenders.eu, the European Union mechanism mobilizes comprehensive support for Brazilian defenders at risk through the material and emergency support, financing, training, and advocacy.

Also, in Thailand, reliable sources have informed ProtectDefenders.eu’s partners about recent cases of judicial harassment and intimidation against human rights defenders. Zambia is also featured in this issue of the monthly digest.

Only in December 2019, at least 35 new attacks against HRDs have been reported.
