In a year marked by rising repression and shrinking civic space, numbers speak volumes. The 2023–2024 Annual Report of ProtectDefenders.eu captures the scale and urgency of global efforts to support human rights defenders (HRDs) on the frontlines. From emergency grants and relocation support to digital security and long-term capacity building, these figures highlight not only the challenges defenders face—but also the collective response mobilised to stand with them.

These snapshots illustrates the scope and diversity of emergency and protection support provided by ProtectDefenders.eu in 2023–2024. 72% of grants addressed urgent needs like relocation, digital security, medical and psychosocial support, while 27% supported long-term protection, including family assistance, office security, and training.
In total, 1,119 defenders were supported—501 of them women HRDs, along with trans, non-binary, and intersex activists. 311 family members and 49 grassroots groups also received direct aid, with protection tailored across age groups and identities.

Furthermore, 4,450+ requests for support, coordination, and advice processed through the 24/7 helpdesk and by the Secretariat.
In the past year, nearly 200 individuals were supported through ProtectDefenders.eu’s temporary relocation programme, including 72 human rights defenders and 127 family members. In 2024, the programme was strengthened to enhance its efficiency, sustainability, and responsiveness, ensuring it remains adaptable to the evolving protection landscape.
